Parallel Workshop Sessions
Session One: Built Environment and Sustainability
A combination of events around energy, the environment and overall quality of the built environment create new research opportunities for our extended research community. This session will identify key social goals and bring new technology solutions. Metrics of performance in energy, water, safety and health will be considered.
- Steve Glaser (UC Berkeley - Civil and Environmental Engineering)
- Iris Tommelein (UC Berkeley - Engineering and Project Management)
- Paul Wright (Chair) (UC Berkeley - Mechanical Engineering)
- Jarmo J Heinonen (Tekes) (Co-Chair)
- Seppo Junnila (HUT)
Session Two: IT in Health Care
Health information technology has the potential to not only help individual patients and doctors, but to also help achieve improvements in health system performance with respect to six goals: safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity. This workshop will report on innovative research on the use of health information technology to achieve such improvements in hospital, ambulatory care, and community settings. Please the following site for more information: IT in Health Care
- Tom Rundall (Chair) (UC Berkeley - School of Public Health)
- Mike Eklund (UC Berkeley - Electrical Engineering & Computer Science)
- Dorian Liepmann (UC Berkeley - Bioengineering)
- John Hsu (Kaiser Permanente)
- Kevin Dawson (UC Davis - Molecular and Cellular Biology)
- Esko Alasaarela (Oulu University) (Co-Chair)
- Karita Ilvonen (Helsinki University of Technology)
Session Three: Embedded Systems and Software
Embedded systems interact digitally with the continuous world, and the software that drives these systems is nontrivial to produce. This session will report on the short and long term challenges in embedded systems, including technologies such as wireless sensor networks, methods for control and actuation, verification issues for composable systems, and programming methodologies that allow designs to scale up (and down).
- Jonathan Sprinkle (UC Berkeley - EECS) (Chair)
- Claire Tomlin (UC Berkeley - Electrical Engineering and Computer Science)
- Oiva Knuuttila (Tekes)
- Riku Jantti (Univ. of Vaasa) (Co-Chair)
Session Four: Service Sciences
Services account for the lion's share of GDP in developed and developing countries, but relatively little is known about service development, their evolution, and the factors that allow for services experimentation and innovation to thrive. This session will examine an emerging field of Services Science that targets research in services; explore emerging research in this field; and discuss areas for future research and collaboration.
- Ravi Nemana (Chair) (UC Berkeley - SSME)
- John Zysman (UC Berkeley - Berkeley Roundtable on the International Economy)
- Minna Suutari (Tekes) (Co-Chair)
- Marja Toivonen (HUT)
- Niiles Airola (HUT)
Session Five: Soft Computing
Soft computing is a platform for intelligent technologies which makes a difference in business and industry.
We will discuss the following four issues:
-- Knowledge mobilization
-- Search Engine and Q&A
-- Simpler and smarter industrial solutions with soft computing technology
-- Making decisions with less precise but more relevant data
- Masoud Nikravesh (Chair) (UC Berkeley - EECS)
- Vesa Niskanen (Helsinki University) (Co-Chair)
- Christer Carlsson (Ã…bo Academy)
Session Six: Network Society
Our panel will consider the promise, performance, and prospects for the Information Society. The current plan is to have three overview talks on the current state in Finland, the U.S., and the EU. The driving questions are why has so little happened, what could be done to increase the positive societal impact of ICT.
- Jerome Feldman (Chair) (UC Berkeley - Computer Science/ICSI)
- Ruzena Bajcsy (UC Berkeley - Computer Science)
- Ben Yoo (UC Davis - Davis CITRIS Director)
- Jarmo Viteli (Tampere University) (Co-Chair)
- Aimo Maanavilja (Elisa Communications)
- Ville-Veikko Ahonen (Prime Minister's Office)
Session Seven: Mobile Media - Consumers as Producers
One characteristic of mobile media is that consumers are also producers. Images, videos, and other media can be captured any time anywhere, published immediately from the phone or later, even remixed with other media, for audiences ranging from friends and family to the whole internet. We will discuss major current and emerging applications, looking at their commonality and diversity, and from this derive future possibilities.
- Nancy Van House (Chair) (UC Berkeley - School of Information)
- Risto Sarvas (HIIT) (Co-Chair)
- Jarmo Eskelinen (ForumVirium)
Session Eight: Network and System Security
This workshop is focused on all topics involving securing large scale systems and networks. Including: Network security at very high data rates, Securing wireless security, Critical infrastructure protection.
- Nick Weaver (Chair) (ICSI)
- Shankar Sastry (CITRIS)
- Anthony Joseph
- Valtteri Niemi (Nokia)
- Hannu Kari (HUT) (Co-Chair)
- Mika Stahlberg (F-Secure)
Session Nine: Wirless Networking Technology
This workshop will address issues in wireless networking and the impact on handheld devices. We will discuss about the evolving wireless local area as well as wide area mesh networks, and their impact on commercial applications. With the advances in radio technologies and various standardization efforts, their impacts on the architectural revolution fo handheld devices, and added-value chain of OEMs&OEDs will be discussed.
- Prasant Mohapatra (Chair)(UC Davis)
