This workshop is the fourth in the series of themed EU-US workshops after Paris (2005)[ http://www.artist-embedded.org/docs/Events/2005/IST-NSF], Washington (March 2006) http://www.truststc.org/euus/wiki/Euus/WashingtonMeeting and Helsinki (June 2006) http://www.truststc.org/euus/wiki/Euus/HelsinkiMeeting.

The theme of the Edinburgh workshop is “Cyber-Physical Systems and Beyond” – a topic that has excited enormous interest and launched research initiatives on both sides of the Atlantic http://varma.ece.cmu.edu/cps/ http://cordis.europa.eu/ist/embedded/infoday-22-230507.htm. Sensor-actuator networks sense and effect the physical world under program control. In the future, autonomous sensor-actuator networks will be more pervasive by infusing sensing, processing, networking and actuating capabilities in the environment and into the fabric of everyday life. These wirelessly networked embedded systems will bridge the physical world of sensory data and the virtual world of digital information.

The workshop brings together leading international researchers from different disciplines to articulate key challenges and identify core research issues in the following areas: technology components (sensors and actuators, battery, energy scavenging and low-power wireless design), networked systems (self-organisation, distributed control, programming abstractions and networking protocols), and future applications.

The Edinburgh workshop is sponsored jointly by the Research Consortium in Speckled Computing (Specknet) and the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), and supported by the EU Information Society Technologies (Framework7), the UK Research Councils, the US National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Scottish Funding Council.

You can register for the event by sending an email to Charmaine Wilson ( ) with your name, affiliation and postal address. Registration is free.

We hope you can join us in Edinburgh and participate in this exciting workshop.

S Shankar Sastry (Co-Chair) Director of CITRIS, University of California
