Please join us for "Self-Replicating Machines, Open Source Hardware, & Comic Books!" by Dr. Saul Griffith from Squid Labs at noon on March 10 in 290 HMMB, UC Berkeley, as part of the Friday Research Exchange.

Abstract:
An abstract should tie a talk together, but with this one I'll leave the cliff-hanger to the end.  Can the three topics of the title be related?  Beginning with Self Replicating machines and  information theories for self assembly, I'll use these concepts of  programmability of materials and mechanisms to segue into Open Source  Hardware - -what the tools are that I'm helping to develop to enable  better sharing and collaboration in engineering.  From there it will hopefully be possible to draw a connection to the really fun stuff --comic books, and new trends in instructional education.
