The California Energy Commission has recently funded a group at UC, Berkeley to conduct research on the deterioration of underground distribution cables. This three year program, conducted within the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), is to investigate novel ways in which incipient cable failure may be detected and the physico-chemical mechanisms of cable failure.
