Dr. Hee Yhon Song, President of Asia Development Institute will speak on

"

Korea as an Economic Hub in Northeast Asia"

in 540 Cory Hall at UC Berkeley at 12p.m., and lunch will be provided.

In this presentation, the possibility of the formation of an economic community in Northeast Asia is discussed, along with the probable role of Korea in this endeavor. In order to meet two great challenges of so-called 'China shock' and the 'shock of knowledge-based economy' with which Korea has been facing recently, three measures are suggested. Lastly, the possibility of an international free city is presented. If an International Free City is built successfully in the Korean Peninsula, it will be greatly beneficial not only to Korea but to all other countries in Northeast Asia as well as western hemisphere.

Information about Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ):

IFEZ is a major project of the Korean government.  It is a new city being constructed near the Incheon International Airport.  IFEZ intends to create an environment (with a focus on China) where Pacific Rim and Northeast Asian business research, education, and cultural exchange can interact free from local taxation and regulations.  The land on which IFEZ is being constructed is landfill of the shallow tidal flats that extend for miles along the west coast of Korea. It already covers several thousand acres and will be doubled in size within the year. There are a large number of research buildings completed and in operation. The infrastructure includes the new international airport, rapid transit to the center of Seoul, and all the services of a modern city.  As part of the long term development, IFEZ is establishing major research labs with business and universities and there are already a number of these centers in place.
