Capital Projects: CITRIS BuildingsThe California legislature has granted CITRIS $100 million in capital projects and operational funds for the construction of new CITRIS facilities. CITRIS SPACE AT UC BERKELEY On the UC Berkeley campus, the new CITRIS headquarters building will add approximately 141,000 gross square feet of space for research laboratories, including a large Microfabrication laboratory, the administrative center for the CITRIS program, a Distance Learning Facility, space for the Millenium Project, laboratories for collaborative research, offices, a 149 seat auditorium, conference rooms, and a student activity lounge/cybercafe. Completion is scheduled for January 2009. The CITRIS Headquarters construction project was recently heralded for its use of concrete with a high volume of coal fly ash. Coal fly ash is a complimentary cementing material (CCM). The use of CCMs enables reduced use of portland cement. Production of portland cement requires significant energy. It is estimated that one ton of CO2 is released per ton of cement produced and cement manufacture may represent up to 8% of all CO2 emissions from human sources. Decreased use of portland cement translates directly into decreased CO2 emissions. Dr. Dan Garcia (CS) has a camera located in Soda Hall and is collecting high resolution images for a Time-Lapse experience of the construction site. Concept Renderings:
