On February 17th 2006, The Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of California, Berkeley in collaboration with the University's Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) and the National Science Foundation hosted a workshop on Biomanufacturing and Logistics Systems. The objective of this workshop was to bring together Bay Area representatives from the biopharmaceutical industry, academia, and other interested contributors to develop a manufacturing and logistics systems research agenda for biomanufacturing. Our goal for the workshop was to develop a fundamental understanding of biopharmaceutical production systems engineering and of how the disciplines of industrial engineering and operations research can advance the state of the art in the production of biopharmaceuticals.

In particular, our goal was to explore three areas critical to the industry:

  • Operations Control
  • Short Term Planning
  • Long Range Planning

For each of these areas, we explored a variety of questions, including:

  • What are the critical biomanufacturing system objectives and important measures of performance?
  • What are the binding constraints and key resources in biomanufacturing?
  • What are the uncertainties and risks involved in biomanufacturing?

These may vary through the different stages of manufacturing such as clinical trials, qualification lots, or ongoing production.

The workshop addressed the areas listed above ' operations control, short term planning, and long term planning.

Powerpoint slides from the workshop are available
