Staying Human in the Computer Age
A three-day symposium to explore the challenges of, and opportunities for, human identity in the computer age. Inspired by keynote addresses, dramatic presentations, and artistic activities (requiring no prior experience), participants will start a dialogue leading to a more conscious relationship with the computer.
Keynote Speakers
Dr. David Levy: Mindful Work and Technology . Dr. Levy is the author of the book, Scrolling Forward: Making Sense of Documents in the Digital Age, Currently he is a professor in the Information School of the University of Washington, where he explores ways of bringing contemplative balance to today's information practices and technologies. In 2005-2006 he was the holder of the Papamarkou Chair at the Library of Congress, and the recipient of a Contemplative Practice Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies. Dr. Levy is also a calligrapher and a bookbinder.
Dr. Ernst Schuberth: The Relationship between Human Thinking, IT, and Reality . Dr. Schuberth, was a professor of mathematics at the University of Tubingen, before becoming a Waldorf teacher and teacher trainer. He has lectured widely on the nature of human thinking and artificial intelligence, about which he was twice commissioned to present papers to the German parliament. In Germany Dr. Schuberth published a book about education in the computer age, and several others on the teaching of mathematics. Currently he is a visiting lecturer at Rudolf Steiner College in Fair Oaks, CA..
Ms. Dorit Winter: Encounter and Language. Ms. Winter is a writer, teacher, translator, painter and flutist. Her articles on contemporary phenomena, especially the computer, have appeared in a variety of publications. She is the author of Because of Yolande , The Art and Science of Teaching Composition, and of a collection of short stories, Sheets of White Light. She began her teaching career as a Waldorf class teacher and has been an adult educator for 17 years, including 12 years as Director of the San Francisco Program of Rudolf Steiner College . Since 2001 Ms Winter has been Director of the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training.
