The growth in Indian telecom sector is touted as a success story. With nearly 400 million mobile connections, expected to reach 700 million by 2012, the sheer size of this market makes it very attractive to service providers. A high valuation of key service providers in the capital markets is an indication of this. The sector is characterized by a very competitive market with 6-8 operators in each service area, resulting in low tariffs. The extremely low cost of service relative to other parts of the world has made telecom service accessible to large sections of the population, large sections of which are poor and constitute the majority of Indian population.

This talk will bring out the issues in providing state of the art services to an uncovered population and the challenges in value added service provision in India
