The Health Informaticist: The Human Side of Health Technology

  • March 1, 2008: 7:00am - 4:00pm
  • Location: UC Davis Medical Center

Until professionals in healthcare, computer science, information science, and information technology understand the role of the informaticist in today’s health care environment, there is little hope in attracting these individuals to the informatics workforce.

This conference will highlight multidisciplinary projects that demonstrate the diverse roles and backgrounds of the people who are the pioneers and architects of this expanding discipline.

The event is the Second Annual Health Informatics Conference on Saturday, March 1, 2008, in the new Education Building in Sacramento.

The keynote speaker is Patricia Abbott, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, an internationally renowned expert in nursing informatics. Abbott served as the director of Nursing Informatics at the University of Maryland School of Nursing for six years before assuming the role of co-director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Nursing Knowledge, Information Management and Sharing at Johns Hopkins University.

Also speaking at the conference is Charles Friedman, PhD, the newly appointed deputy national coordinator for Health Information Technology. Prior to assuming his role at the Office of the National Coordinator, Friedman was associate director for Research Informatics and Information Technology at NIH's National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and a senior scholar at the National Library of Medicine. Friedman is widely known for establishing the Center for Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as professor and associate vice chancellor for Biomedical Informatics from 1996 to 2003.

There are hands-on demonstrations in the Center for Virtual Care, the Telemedicine Learning Center, the UC Davis Imaging Center, and of virtual reality systems on the Internet. We expect a lot of outside interest from our colleagues in other health systems because of the strength and variety of the program.
