Berkeley Team Receives NSF Grant for Homeland Security

Five UC Berkeley researchers have been awarded a $1.4 million grant to improve detection of nuclear threats. Professor Ed Morse of Nuclear Engineering is the PI for the project. The 4 co-PIs are Professor Brian Wirth of Nuclear Engineering, Eric Norman, Professor in Residence in Nuclear Engineering, Professor Jim Siegrist of Physics, and Professor Dorit Hochbaum of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and the Haas School of Business.

 

The DONUTS (Domestic NUclear Threat Security) Initiative uses a four-pronged approach towards its goal of enabling the detection of nuclear weapon materials at ports of entry into the United States. These areas are development of new detector materials, development of imaging algorithms and data mining for informed decisionmaking, expanding the nuclear physics data base, and development of improved signal processing and networks for detectors.
