Paul Wright Receives 2008 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Lifetime Achievement Award

Paul Wright, professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of California at Berkeley and Acting CITRIS Director was recently honored with 2008 ASME Computers and Information in Engineering Division’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Founded in 1880 as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME is a not-for-profit professional organization that promotes the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidisciplinary engineering and allied sciences throughout the world. Paul K. Wright is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of California at Berkeley, where he holds the A. Martin Berlin Chair. He also serves as co-director of the Berkeley Manufacturing Institute (BMI) and co-director of the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC). In 2007, he was appointed as the interim director for UC Berkeley’s CITRIS, which hosts many multidisciplinary projects on large societal problems, such as healthcare, services and intelligent infrastructures. His current research is in energy scavenging and storage for microelectronics. His previous research was on Internet-based rapid-prototyping and computer-aided design and manufacturing. Dr. Wright has over 300 publications, including the widely popular book, Manufacturing Intelligence, co-authored with David Bourne and published by Addison Wesley. Born in London, he obtained his degrees from the University of Birmingham, England and joined Carnegie Melon University in 1979 following appointments at the University of Auckland, New Zealand and Cambridge University, England. Dr. Wright is a fellow of ASME, a fellow of SME, and a member of the National Academy of Engineers.
