CITRIS Research Overview

The CITRIS mission embraces a broad range of research topics, all aimed at helping the "application pull" of major society needs meet the "technology push" typical of individual researchers.

CITRIS sponsors research that will have a major impact on the economy
and quality of life of Californians and the global community:

  • Conserving energy
  • Enhancing educational opportunities and the delivery of educational courses
  • Saving lives by mitigating the effects of natural and man-made disasters
  • Boosting transportation efficiency
  • Advancing diagnosis and treatment of disease through the use of information technology
  • Expanding business growth through richer personalized information services.

Much more detail concerning the eight major "Driving Applications" for CITRIS research may be found at the links listed below.

In addition to the eight Driving Applications listed below, CITRIS has added three Major Areas of Focus. In April of 2005, as CITRIS approached the end of its fourth year of existence, the faculty leaders met with representatives of the CITRIS Corporate Sponsors in a series of meetings to define a few areas of major focus for the next phase of CITRIS research.

Three themes emerged from those discussions:

  • Services science, including an emphasis on cyber-infrastructure;
  • Energy and environmental monitoring, building upon and leveraging the results of an enormous amount of sensor-network research done during the first four years ("launch phase") of CITRIS; and
  • Information technology for radical improvements and cost savings in the delivery of health care.
