CITRIS Research Funding Opportunities

CITRIS Seed Funding Opportunity

We invite individual UC researchers or groups of faculty to apply for a One Year Seed Grant in the range of $50,000 to $75,000 to grow a CITRIS center, where IT or similar is used creatively for the "Interests of Society" mission. The theme could align with the below four existing thrusts or be a new idea. It is hoped to fund as many as 15-20 projects across the 4 campuses.

Short History: CITRIS is the Center for Information Technology in the Interests of Society. The planning for CITRIS began in 1999-2000 and it soon became one of the four California Institutes for Science and Innovation (CISIs), centers of excellence, funded by then-Governor Gray Davis' administration. It serves 4 UC campuses (Berkeley, Davis, Merced and Santa Cruz). The umbrella organization of CITRIS then hosts many multi-disciplinary smaller centers in which information technology is being developed to solve large societal problems including healthcare, services, and intelligent infrastructures (such as energy, water, earthquake safety and sustainability). New space was created on the Santa Cruz campus for CITRIS and, at Berkeley, a new building for CITRIS is under construction, adjacent to Cory Hall, with Fall 2008 as the expected opening date.

Today's Established Research Thrusts/Themes:
The following main research thrusts have been developed at CITRIS, guided by faculty governance and the Industrial Advisory Board:

1. Intelligent Infrastructures

o Energy: the use of IT, sensor webs, and modelling for smart sustainable energy

o Public health and safety: structural monitoring, air quality, and first response

o The environment and water supply: sensors and modelling for quality of life in CA

2. IT in Healthcare

o Trusted information exchange of medical records

o IT for tele-medicine and implantables

o Statistical analysis of medical data and imaging

3. Services

o Science, Management Engineering (SSME): A collaboration between CITRIS, the Haas School of Business, the Berkeley College of Engineering and the Berkeley School of Information. The collaboration involves an innovative curriculum and a research program which target the services sector.

o Knowledge Services and Enterprise Management (KSME): A UC Santa Cruz Extension graduate-level certificate program at the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus in cooperation with the UCSC Baskin School of Engineering.

4. Technology and Infrastructure for Emerging Regions

o Links between human health and air pollution

o Eye care services in developing regions

o Wireless infrastructures for communications in remote villages

If you are interested in seed funding, please download the CITRIS funding document below, and send it to Gary Baldwin at garyb@citris-uc.org or mail it to him at 280 HMMB, Berkeley, CA 94720-1764.

Please note: There is no deadline at the moment for the seed grant funding as we hope to keep the funding ongoing year-round.
